Highgate Summer School
We would like to take this opportunity to announce that Highgate School will again be holding a summer school this year. The dates for the school are from the 25th of June until the 3rd of August. Our theme this year will be 'Games' ranging from the Olympic Games which will be held in London this year, to all sorts of other wonderful games that we can play ourselves. More details will follow along with application forms!
Welcome back Susan!
We'd like to take this opportunity to welcome back our deputy Head Mistress Susan Connelly. Welcome back Miss Susan, we're glad to have you back and hope you feel much better!
Acts of Kindness
As part of our Emotional Health Week the children and staff collected spontaneous acts of kindness towards others; something that distinguishes the character of the school.
Highgate Recycled Bag Flag
In art during this term the main theme for the children was recycling. In co-ordination with Miss Penny, the school's very talented art teacher, the children of the Primary Department created a unique Highgate Flag using old plastic bags. It was a superb effort on all behalves but special praise must go to Miss Penny who managed to piece all the bags together and get such a wonderful end result. Well done to all involved!
Topics For The Term
The topic for this term for the Early Years is "Under The Ground" and the topic for the Primary Department is "The Olympics".
Early Years Play Day
An Early Years Play date will be held on Friday 25th May from 12:00 - 1:00pm in your child/ren's classroom.
Parent Workshop - 25th May
A parent workshop "How to develop a healthy lifestyle" by Tatev Petrosyan a Life Coach will be held on Friday 25th May from 8:15 -9:15am.
Parking
As you may be aware the buses are now collecting and dropping off children in the parking lot. We kindly ask parents to be vigilant when driving their cars into the parking area as we have noticed that many parents speed and put other children and themselves in danger.
Creative Writing
Highgate School is once again organising the island wide Creative Writing Competition. Students will be doing their Creative Writing in class during the week of 7th May. Once all stories from other schools are collected they will be marked by a group of judges and the winners will be announced at the end of May.
Old Nicosia trip
Earlier this year the year 3s and 4s took a trip back in time to old nicosia. The children visited the Hadjigeorgaki House and explored the Leventio Museum where they had the opportunity to learn about the evolution of Nicosia.
Argos Animal Sanctuary Visit
The Primary School has their visit from the Argos Animal Sanctuary and the amount collected by the children for the sancturay was 213 Euros. A big well done to everyone who donated!
Highgate Unplugged
On Friday 6th of April many students and teachers alike took part in the Highgate Unplugged event. It was organised by our very own Panos Lysandrou who was very proud of the success of the evening and the wonderful participation of teachers and students. Many delicious snacks were on offer in the canteen and overall the night was deemed an enormous success.
Sports Day
On Tuesday 3rd, Thursday 4th and Friday 5th of April, Highgate School hosted the Nursery & KS1, KS2 and Secondary Sports Days respectively. All 3 days were not without their tiny hitches but they ended up being extremely successful to the joy of all involved. Teachers and students alike were all overjoyed by the participation and success of each day. The PTA held a bake sale on each day which was a great success in itself.
Unicef Visit
On March 27th Unicef visited Highgate School to sell various charity goods. They set up their stall in the canteen and sold many products in aid of their cause.
Science Fair
Highgate School’s annual Science Fair took place on the 23rd March and judges evaluated each project, giving it credit on structure, hypothesis and clarity.
Oroklini Trip Year 4
As part of our unit on 'wetlands' Year 4 visited Oroklini, where representatives of Bird Life Cyprus gave the children some valuable information on local birds and this was followed by a trip to Oroklini lake.
Year 6 Trip to Kritou Tera
On March 26th, the Year 6 class went on an overnight trip to the beautiful village of Kritou Tera to visit the European Environmental Studies Centre.
Highgate School Girls vs Senior School Girls Football Match
On Friday 30th March Highgate School Girls of year 5/6 came up against the older Senior School Girls of Years 7/8/9 in a football match at the Arsenal Soccer Schools football grounds.
Global Leadership Foundation
We are happy to announce that our colleagues from the Global Leadership Foundation had a fabulously positive and immediate impact on our students, teachers and parents. This was the first of many planned visits to our Training Centre. Emotional Health is one of the many aspects we wish to provide and enhance in the daily performance for teachers, parents, children of all age groups, as well as for Corporate Bodies. Harvest Assembly
On Friday 21st of October we will be having a Harvest Assembly. The children will be presenting projects and songs that they have prepared on this, the last assembly before half-term!
Universal Peace With Love From Highgate
Highgate is a planning a "Universal Peace with love from Highgate" Event incorporating a Handcraft Market, International Cuisine, Children's participation stalls - one will be themed pumpkin candle holders, mask making etc. as well as an international music programme. Halloween Party
On October 31st the PTA hosted a Halloween Party for children and parents at the school. We had a great turn out with some fantastic costumes and disguises! We'd like to thank everyone who managed to show up to make it a great day for all!
Highgates Enchanted Christmas
Dear PTA friends Come along this Saturday and help us decorate Highgate School. We want to give the school a Christmas feel before the 3rd of December Event. We will be cutting snowflakes, decorating a Christmas tree and much more. We will welcome any contributions and ideas you may have. We will be there from 11am. Thank you The PTA
Swimming Gala
On Wednesday 19th of October Highgate School will ttake part in a Swimming Gala at The Grammar School! Stay tuned for the results!
Micromania Movie Premiere
On Friday 18th November at 6pm at the Nicosia Municipality 'Play Safe' Park in Ayios Andreas Micromania will be hosting their movie premiere "Only Those Who Ride Can Understand". There will be free drinks and free food so come along and be part of this great event, but don't forget to bring a blanket as it's outdoors and could get a bit chilly! We hope to see you all there!
Oranges & Lemons
On Saturday 5th of November from 10.00am till 12.30pm we will be hosting our first Oranges and Lemons activity day. Activities will include games, face painting and reading. We will be hosting Oranges and Lemons every Saturday and all under 5s are welcome!
Half-term Holidays
On Friday 21st of October we are breaking up for half-term. The dates that the school will be closed are October 24th until the 27th, with the 28th being a national holiday here in Cyprus.
Summer School 2011
Join us at our summer school commencing 27th June to 22nd July, for fun, challenge, friendships and knowledge. We also provide English classes for Beginners and Intermediate levels. Activity Day
A great day was had by all! The sun shone on Saturday 9th April while parents, teachers and pupils busied themselves with planting flowers and trees; they painted murals, sung, danced and found out how to make aromatherapy soap. The atmosphere was welcoming, warm and friendly, characterising Highgate School in general. We wish to thank everyone who contributed making the day a huge success. ‘I love it’ was the most popular phrase from children and adults.
Highgate Discount Card
All staff at the Highgate School are given a card which entitles them to special deals and discounts in a variety of businesses as a small token of appreciation.
Leaves for Learning
We are looking for companies, groups or individuals who are themselves committed to the future and share our vision to become donors to our educational development programme. Each donor’s name would be permanently engraved on a plaque and attached to our “Leaves for Learning” tree mural; reflecting your commitment to the future of our young people and maintaining your company/personal profile in our community. Jo-Nena Savva
Jo-Nena Savva is a member of our school community. As an International tennis player her ranking is 440 in the world, number 1 of the ladies and under 18’s in Cyprus. We are very proud of her and as sponsors we delight in her success.
‘The Peace Tree’
The year 1 children have been working on the film called ‘The Peace Tree’ by Mitra Sen as part of our Media studies and topic ‘Lands Far and Near’. The children have been exploring different cultures, celebrating and understanding the meaning of peace, appreciating diversity. Parents and children took part in a number of creative activities, based on different cultural celebrations, wrote statements and painted symbols of peace. On the International Peace Tree day 1st of June the children will hold an assembly and place their ‘peace’ messages on a tree.

In April, we were happy to welcome the parents of our students who were winners in the recent island-wide Creative Writing competition, which is organised annually by Highgate School. Our winners were: Y2: Ioanna Artemiou (2nd Prize) Y3: Omer Serak (1st Prize) Y4: Yvonne Fyriou (1st Prize) Y9: Elizabeth Michael (2nd Prize)
Trip to Eleouthkia
On 17th of May, the Greek Department of our Secondary School organized a mini trip to Eleouthkia Traditional and Botanical Park and “Petra tou Romiou” in Paphos, for KS3 and Year 10 students. There, students had the opportunity to get in touch with Cypriot tradition, environment and endemic plants of Cyprus. It was a nice experience for all students and it was a smart combination between learning and relaxing.
Early Years Sports Day
Sports Days were held in April in the Early Years and Primary Departments. All children took part in a variety of activities, displaying their team work and physical skills. Parents were also invited to participate in races, which they did with great humour and enthusiasm, to the delight of the children!
Trip to Greece December 2011
The Greek department of our secondary school organized a trip to Greece from 15 until 19 of December 2011. Mr Andreas Andreou, (Greek teacher) and students from Year 9 to Year 11 went for a two day trip to Athens, and for the remaining three days participated in the Pan-Hellenic Youth Summit that took place in Larisa, Greece. In the Pan-Hellenic Youth Summit there were youths from different places of Greece. Our students presented their project, with the title 'The problem of obesity in young people' and discussed it with the other students about the health problems of young people of this generation.

Jazz
A group of Jazz musicians were invited by our Media Studies teacher to play for the children, who were greatly inspired by the enthusiastic performance. It was highlighted by the visitors how the children became actively involved in the creativity of the event; they added that they would be delighted to return in the future.
Greek Night
A splendid evening of humour, music and dance celebrating our Cypriot culture and dialect took place on Wednesday 1st June in our outdoor amphitheatre. Adults and children alike enjoyed a fun-filled evening, bringing back memories of Cypriot traditions.
